Summer Reading Family Letter | Becker Elementary School

Becker Families,

I can’t believe it is summer!! I miss y’all so much and can’t wait to see you. Here’s a friendly reminder of the best thing you can do to help your kiddo be ready for school next year and beat summertime boredom…you guessed it…READ! 🙂

Read outside, read together, read to little siblings, listen to audio books, read to pets, read on FaceTime to grandparents, talk about your reading, read by the pool, just READ! Run out of ideas? Check this out!

Research shows that when we flood children with books and allow them to choose what they want to read, they will become more internally motivated to continue to read. This of course helps them in ALL subjects and sets them up for success for the future! ❤

So, let your kiddo choose what they want to read–ESPECIALLY over the summer. Comic books, non-fiction, fantasy, how-to drawing books, graphic novels, realistic fiction, audiobooks, and any other way you can think of–it all helps!

Your mission, should you choose to accept it: STOP the “summer slide”! Help your kiddo play my summer reading game to have fun & stay sharp.

Remember, you can still access 1,000s of FREE ebooks and audiobooks through MackinVIA, the district’s ebook platform, over the summer. See this video on how to login & a message from me 🙂

Not sure what to read next? Explore Austin ISD librarians’ favorite books for the summer! Also, check out the tons of FREE resources the Austin Public Library has provided and their Summer Reading Program

Purchase your books for summer reading with our Summer Virtual Book Fair to support the Becker Library! Your kiddo can also track their reading with Scholastic’s Home Base game.

As always, please let me know if you have any questions: minda.l.anderson@austinisd.org or on the Becker Library social media (Instagram: beckerreads, Facebook: austinbeckerlibrary, Twitter: BeckerElemLib).

Happy Reading! ️
