On Saturday, January 10, 2014 at 3 p.m. Becker Elementary at 906 W. Milton St., Austin, will host a screening of Speaking in Tongues (www.speakingintonguesfilm.
The film Speaking in Tongues, which took home the Documentary Audience Award at the San Francisco International Film Festival, follows four diverse students and their families as they encounter the challenges and delights of becoming fluent in two languages. For decades, language education has been a hot-button issue for educators, politicians, and parents, yet as pioneering activist Ling-chi Wang explains in the film, America’s linguistic richness is among its greatest strengths. Employers need multilingual skills and our national security apparatus pours millions each year into teaching “strategic languages.”
Becker Elementary is a Two-Way Dual Language school in Austin Independent School District in which students who speak English and Spanish as their first languages learn academic subjects together in the same classroom in English and in Spanish with the goal of obtaining academic fluency in both languages.
Becker Elementary School has begun its school tours as part of the Dual Language Enrollment Period for pre-Kindergarten through 5th grade students. Becker is free and open to students from throughout Austin ISD. Applications for admission to the Dual Language program at Becker for 2015-16 are currently being accepted beginning with a deadline for applications of February 27, 2015.
