Becker has done such a great job helping our precious children embrace their bilingual identities. The Dual Language/Curriculum team wanted to find a way to support this good work. A team of us are going to celebrate the language of the day during drop off by speaking exclusively in Spanish to our children and other parents and staff on Monday, Wednesdays and Fridays, and then in English on Tuesdays and Thursdays.
We’re hoping that if enough parents try to speak only in the language of the day—especially on M, W, F—students will see that we truly are a bilingual campus. Further, we are hoping that kiddos will see that we can all try to communicate with each other, no matter what our proficiency level may be in the language. We’re hoping kids will take more risks with their second language if they see the grown-ups doing the same thing every morning — being brave, making mistakes, finding ways to express ourselves even when we are still learning.
If you’re interested in this endeavor, you only have to do one thing: Speak in the language of the day—as much as you can—during drop off. A simple “hola” or “buenos dias” could be a signal on MWF that you are ready to chat for a bit in Spanish that day.
